As a fantastic way to view and experience the Canadian Rockies, The Rocky Mountaineer train travels both east and west between Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia and Banff, Jasper and Calgary, Alberta. What some would consider a trip of a lifetime, this two-day rail journey ventures through Western Canada and the Canadian Rockies. This breathtaking journey takes place on historical rail routes which were constructed over a century ago. Seeing the entire trip takes place during the daytime, you are to be sure not to miss any of the magical scenery.

Routes:

To see all the Canadian Rockies have to offer, there are three spectacular and all unique rail routes to choose from: The world-renowned Kicking Horse route, the Yellowhead route and the Fraser Discovery route.

All three routes feature fantastic scenery of the Canadian Rockies, superb onboard service and include a comfortable overnight accommodation. This will ensure nothing will be missed along your journey!

 
 

The world-renowned Kicking Horse Route

Rocky Mountaineer
Kicking Horse Route:

This route takes place between Vancouver to Banff or Calgary and traces the historical rail line which was used to unite Easter and Western Canada.

Some of the route highlights include: Kicking Horse Pass, the Spiral Tunnels, Fraser and Thompson Canyon, Stoney Creek Bridge and The Last
Spike.

Eastbound

Day 1 Vancouver Arrival

Arrive in Vancouver and spend time exploring this scenic city on your own. Overnight in Vancouver.

Day 2 Vancouver to Kamloops

Travel onboard the Rocky Mountaineer from the coastal city of Vancouver to Kamloops, in the heart of British Columbia's interior. On today's journey you will see dramatic changes in scenery, from the lush green fields of the Fraser River valley, through forests and winding river canyons surrounded by the peaks of the Coast and Cascade mountains, to the desert-like environment of the interior. Highlights include the rushing waters of Hell's Gate in the Fraser Canyon and the steep slopes and rock sheds along the Thompson River. Your day concludes as the Rocky Mountaineer travels along the shores of Kamloops Lake and into Kamloops. Overnight in Kamloops.

Day 3 Kamloops to Banff

Your journey continues eastwards to the mighty Canadian Rockies and the province of Alberta. Once again you will see a spectacular array of scenery as you travel across ranchlands, along rocky lakeshores, over high mountain passes and through the remarkable tunnels that form part of the rich rail history of the Canadian Rockies. Today's highlights include Craigellachie, where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven, the climb over Rogers Pass, the Kicking Horse Canyon, the Spiral Tunnels and, of course, the glaciers and snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies. Your rail journey ends in the resort town of Banff this evening. Overnight in Banff.

Day 4 Banff Departure

Your journey continues eastwards to the mighty Canadian Rockies and the province of Alberta. Once again you will see a spectacular array of scenery as you travel across ranchlands, along rocky lakeshores, over high mountain passes and through the remarkable tunnels that form part of the rich rail history of the Canadian Rockies. Today's highlights include Craigellachie, where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven, the climb over Rogers Pass, the Kicking Horse Canyon, the Spiral Tunnels and, of course, the glaciers and snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies. On today's journey you will again see dramatic changes in scenery, from the desert-like environment of the interior, through winding river canyons and pristine forests, to the Coast and Cascade mountains and the lush green fields of the Fraser River Valley. Highlights include the steep slopes and rock sheds along the Thompson River and the rushing waters of Hell's Gate in the Fraser Canyon. Your rail journey ends on arrival in Vancouver this evening. This route takes place between Vancouver and the resort town of Jasper and is known for its majestic scenery and extensive wildlife – which commonly include bear sightings. Some of the route highlights include: Pyramid Falls, Yellowhead Pass, Fraser and Thompson Canyon, Jasper National Park and Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies.

Fraser Discovery Route:

This route takes place between Whistler and Jasper and follows the mighty Fraser River. Some of the route highlights include: the historic Cariboo Gold Rush region, the lush forests of Northern BC, Anderson and Seton lakes, the awe inspiring Rocky Mountain Trench and
Mount Robson.

Day 1 Whistler Arrival

Arrive in Whistler and spend time exploring this picturesque mountain resort on your own. Overnight in Whistler.

Day 2 Whistler to Quesnel

Travel onboard the Rocky Mountaineer to the charming rural town of Quesnel, gateway to the North Cariboo. Enjoy breathtaking and varied scenery, from the river canyons and lush farmland of the Pemberton Valley to the desert-like conditions of the Fraser Canyon to rolling hills and vast ranchlands of the Cariboo Plateau. Highlights include the shorelines of Anderson Lake and glacial-fed Seton Lake, sweeping views of the Fraser Canyon and the crossing of Deep Creek Bridge, one of the highest railway bridges in the world. Your day concludes as the Rocky Mountaineer follows the banks of the Fraser River into Quesnel. Overnight in Quesnel.

Day 3 Quesnel Jasper

Your journey continues eastwards today to the majestic Canadian Rockies and Jasper National Park. From Quesnel the Rocky Mountaineer follows the Fraser River north to the town of Prince George, then travels east through the forests of northern British Columbia, home to plentiful wildlife, including a large population of moose. Entering the Rocky Mountain Trench you are surrounded to the north by the steeply rising Rocky Mountains and to the south by the Cariboo Mountains. Continue climbing past Mount Robson, at 3,954 metres (12,972 feet) the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, and through the Yellowhead Pass into the province of Alberta.
